Dig 1 - Volleyball Sneaker

To bridge the gap between volleyball and basketball footwear, the goal is to design a versatile shoe that serves as both a high-performance volleyball and basketball sneaker, ensuring it reaches the same level of iconic design and exceptional fit as its basketball counterpart, thereby meeting the needs of volleyball players seeking the benefits of basketball footwear.

Market Research: Baksetball vs. Volleyball

Many volleyball players (non-professional) would lean toward basketball sneakers when it came to gameday.
Many basketball shoes can be utilized for volleyball, but not vice-versa, why is that the case?

“I felt like they provided a better fit around the ankle, more secure and honestly just looked better. Look good feel good.”

“I get dependent on knee/ankle supports & it'll truly hinder my performance once I take them off.”

Ideations

Ideations

Many basketball sneakers combine functionality with a meaningful story behind their design. Inspired by this, I studied the form and movement of volleyball players and used these insights to shape the shoe's design. This approach adds a deeper story to the design, beyond just focusing on functionality.

Final Design

The final design of the Dig 1 combines key basketball shoe features with a story that unifies the design, making for a unique volleyball shoe. The midsole's wave-like pattern reflects the game’s continuous flow, while reinforced heels provide extra protection during jumps. A cross-strap keeps the laces tight and secure.

Physical Prototype

Designing a physical prototype seemed to be difficult given that I had limited access to the right tools and materials. With my approach, I decided to take apart an already existing basketball shoe and alter the pattern to fit my design. I came up with the final pattern shown below and went from there. The sole is constructed and smoothed from yellow foam.

The final shown below :)

Branding

The posters draw inspiration from basketball advertisements (airmax, jordans etc.), with a touch of satire. Recognizing the strong creative direction and significant funding in basketball media, I chose to incorporate those elements into the Dig 1 campaign as well."
